What should a child expect?

Each child can anticipate a fun experience where they move at their own pace. Courageous Fliers are given opportunities and direction to accomplish goals that they might not believe possible. Please click here to learn more about the details of the Courageous Fliers program.

Who does the flying?

The kids do!  But we include in each flight one of our our Certified Flight Instructors who are employed by local airports or universities.   Our instructors are great at both flying and instruction with children.  Also on each flight we encourage a parent or guardian also accompanies the child on the flight.

Can children ages 5 to 18 really fly a plane?

Yes, as long as they are under the supervision of a Certified Flight Instructor (CFI). We have had children as young as 4 participate in some of our activities. We evaluate requests outside our established age guidelines on a case-by-case basis.

What kind of plane is flown?

How long are children in the program?

A child is encouraged to participate for up to three years. Our ongoing flight-related activities – all focused on further building confidence – foster a sense of fun and anticipation for the kids. Another benefit is that becoming part of the aviation community helps build an additional support system for participants and their families. While participants also experience the joy of flight, our focus always remains on building the child’s self-confidence and supporting the family’s needs.

Is there an application review process?

There is a registration process but there is no application/approval process. The need for service is left up to the discretion of the parent or guardian. This streamlined approach helps get children into the program quickly.

What is the cost to participating families?

There is no charge to participating families.

What do participants say about Flight1?

Comments from parents of Courageous Fliers:

“That was one of the best experiences Shawn has ever had. He talks about it all of the time. I can’t thank you enough for letting him experience this. I am even planning on looking into some flight classes for him if they are available for his age so he can pursue this as a possible future. He is looking forward to what comes next.”

“This was a great opportunity for both boys. It gave Aidan something really cool to do and tell his friends about and he got some extra (and much needed) special attention. And it was great for Alec to open up his horizons a little bit and expand his interests (he has autism and very limited interests). They are both really excited to fly.”

“I just wanted to thank you and everyone who helped with Aleasha’s simulator for everything they did. She had an absolute blast and couldn’t stop talking about it all evening! You guys gave her a 17th birthday present she will never forget and I deeply appreciate it. Now she can’t wait for her airplane ride!!”

“Thank you and everyone with the University and Flight One for the event! The kids had a blast! This will truly be an adventure that they will never forget! Thank you!”

As for the kids, their smiles tell the story better than words ever could!
